The term hill tribe refers
to the groups of ethnic minorities that live in the mountain
regions of northern Thailand. The origins of the hill tribes
date back nearly 2000 years, when most migrated to Thailand from
Tibet, Burma, China and Laos. Their way of life has changed little
over time. It is estimated that there are approximately 20 different
hill tribes in Thailand, whose total population is estimated
at 550,000. There are seven major tribes: KAREN, HMONG (MEO),
YAO, LISU, LAHU, LAWA and AKHA.
Each hill tribe has its own distinct
language, customs, style of dress and religious beliefs. The
most evident and notable traits of the hill tribe peoples are
their beautifully crafted costumes and exquisite adorn-ments.
Great time and imagination is invested in the production of clothes
and jewelry. Most articles are produced within each family and
represent status and express pride. High status in the community
is reserved for blacksmiths and silversmiths. Jewelry is normally
made from silver, most melted down from Indian and Burmese silver
coins. Brass, copper and aluminum may also be used. The hill
tribe people regard silver as currency and an indication of wealth
and status of the family of the wearer.
During the last ten years hill tribe
dress and adornments have come to be regarded as marketable,
silver products being among the most popular. Beadworks Boston
and Cambridge are pleased to offer a variety of Thai hill tribe
silver beads, silver strands, and ornate silver pendants. Hill
tribe silver contains 95% silver. Please stop by one of our shops
